First Steps Pediatric Therapy is an out-of-network provider. We do not bill insurance companies directly. This model allows us to prioritize individualized care and spend more one-on-one time with your child without the restrictions often imposed by insurance carriers. While we are out-of-network, many families are able to receive partial or full reimbursement through their insurance plan’s out-of-network benefits. Upon request, we will provide you with a Superbill. This is a detailed receipt using standard medical coding that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Note: We recommend calling your insurance provider beforehand to ask about your "out-of-network outpatient physical therapy" benefits.

We specialize in the "First Steps" of life, primarily focusing on infants from birth to 12 months, as well as toddlers who are working toward independent walking and early gross motor milestones.

The initial evaluation involves a comprehensive look at your child’s movement patterns, strength, and developmental progress. We discuss your concerns and history, observe your child during play, and begin crafting a custom plan. You will also receive immediate strategies to start using that same day.

No, you do not need a referral to start physical therapy. New Jersey is a "Direct Access" state, meaning you have the legal right to seek evaluation and treatment from a physical therapist without a doctor's prescription. Because First Steps Pediatric Therapy is a cash-based practice, we are not bound by the restrictive referral requirements that many insurance companies demand before they will pay for a visit.
This model allows us to:
Start immediately: You can book an evaluation the moment you notice a "red flag" or have a concern about your baby's development.
Remove barriers: You don’t have to wait weeks for a pediatrician appointment just to get a piece of paper.
Stay focused on your child: Our care is dictated by your baby's needs and your family's goals, not by insurance red tape.
Note on Collaboration: While a referral isn't required to begin, I value the "team" approach. With your permission, I am always happy to collaborate with your pediatrician to coordinate care.
